Wenge curved bespoke staircase, London
Another great example of our craftmanship by Pinnacle Joinery. This amazing, curved staircase made from Wenge, a popular African hardwood, features a mixture of beautifully made metal spindles and hardwood strings – a real feature to this property.
The Challenge
Our client envisioned a staircase that would not only serve as a functional element but also as a statement piece of art within their property.
The challenge was to design and build a curved staircase that combined sophistication with technical precision, using Wenge – a distinctive dark hardwood known for its deep, rich colour. The goal was to create a staircase that stood out while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding light-coloured finishes.
The project also included designing a circular wine cellar beneath the staircase, ensuring that both the staircase and the cellar would harmoniously complement each other in terms of materials and style. This required addressing complex technical requirements while maintaining a high aesthetic standard.
The Solution
To meet the client’s vision, Pinnacle Joinery collaborated with Atelier Ochre, award-winning architects, to craft a truly remarkable staircase.
The project features bowed treads, with the front curves matching the curvature of the risers. Each riser was meticulously mitred to the Wenge brackets, a technically challenging process that required precise craftsmanship to ensure both beauty and structural integrity.
To achieve a floating effect, the staircase was designed to be self-supported, anchored by a central post adjacent to the wall. This innovative approach allowed the staircase to hover elegantly without direct contact with the wall, emphasising its grandeur.
The staircase is adorned with 20mm burnished and waxed metal spindles, and 30mm posts, which accentuate the two beautiful volutes at the ends of the staircase. These elements were carefully selected to enhance the overall design and ensure a cohesive look.
Atelier Ochre designed custom panelling to cast a dramatic shadow of the staircase onto the right-hand wall. This effect, achieved with strategically placed wall lights, added depth and visual interest, making the staircase stand out even more.
The Result
The result is a breath-taking curved Wenge staircase that truly serves as a work of art within the property. Its dark, polished finish contrasts beautifully with the surrounding light-coloured finishes, making it a striking focal point. The complex design elements, such as the bowed treads and the mitred risers, are executed with precision, showcasing the highest level of craftsmanship. The integration of the wine cellar beneath the staircase enhances the overall design, offering both functionality and visual appeal.
