The challenge

From the outset, it was clear that the staircase needed to be both beautiful and functional, creating an inviting focal point. We began by crafting oak treads, chosen for their timeless appeal and strength. These treads were paired with a seamless oval oak handrail which ran effortlessly along the curve, enhancing the sense of flow throughout the space. To add a modern touch, we used burnished and waxed metal spindles, which provided both elegance and durability.

Supporting the structure, yellow pine strings were selected, and birch ply treads were added for a refined finish.

The intricate detailing didn’t stop there – yellow pine aprons were designed to create a rounded gallery, with oak base rails following the soft curve to complete the look.

The solution

Attention to detail is what sets our work apart. Hidden middle stringers were carefully integrated into the design, providing additional structural support without compromising the staircase’s clean lines.

Our team also reinforced the spindles with metal plates for extra strength, ensuring the staircase would stand the test of time.

Every element of this staircase was thoughtfully considered, from the materials we selected to the way each component came together. Resulting in a flawless integration of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

The result

The result was a breath-taking staircase that truly transformed the heart of this beautiful home, becoming a defining feature that caught the eye upon entry.

The seamless flow from the entrance into the hallway created a natural, cohesive feel that enhanced the overall aesthetic of the space.

Every element, from the graceful curve of the design to the carefully selected materials, worked in harmony to bring a sense of elegance and warmth to the home. The oak treads and handrails, combined with the burnished metal spindles, created a striking contrast while maintaining a timeless appeal.

The client was absolutely delighted with the result, expressing their satisfaction with both the final design, they were particularly impressed with how effortlessly the staircase blended into the existing architecture while still standing out as a bold, unique feature.

This staircase is a true testament to the possibilities of bespoke joinery – a perfect balance of style, function, and craftsmanship.

It not only serves as a practical element but also as a statement piece that elevates the entire home, leaving a lasting impression on all who see it.

Five floor bespoke curved staircase renovation

Pinnacle Joinery are scaling new heights, and climbing the ladder of success when it comes to feature staircases. With 5 floors to conquer in this prestigious home renovation, in addition to the challenges of a global pandemic, Pinnacle rose to the occasion. Find out all about this stair-raising brief for their latest London project.

The Challenge
Pinnacle are renowned for their beautiful bespoke curved staircases. Having worked with Pinnacle on other projects, the contractor, Chelsea Construction along with the Architects Rundell Associates, approached Pinnacle with a staircase that would require special attention and expertise. This staircase would span 5 levels and become the centrepiece of this incredible  property. Pinnacle were able to re-create the vision of the design, as well as assemble the elements in their workshop, to consult on materials and the look and feel. Pinnacle know that the small details matter and they wanted the client to fall in love with every aspect.

The staircase was to be constructed in European oak and stained black to create the dramatic feel. The staircase dropped 5 levels from top to bottom and ended with the swimming pool in the  basement.

The Solution
A major part of our works have been the supply and installation of the structural steels under the staircase, along with the engineer we had to find a way of hiding the structural steels within the depth of the strings making the staircase look proportionate and not just structurally sound. The second stage would see the installation of the permanent treads and spindles into place.

In fact, there would be over 1000 metal spindles to fit. The staircase dropped 5 levels from top to bottom and ended with concrete steps with the same handrail and spindles to access the  swimming pool in the basement. With lockdown in full force, despite Pinnacle working safely on projects throughout the pandemic, there were unavoidable delays to the surrounding works.  Pinnacle’s flexibility, responsiveness and ability to store materials off-site meant that they were able to adapt effectively to work seamlessly with other contractors as the works progressed.
With their calm and professional approach, Pinnacle enabled the necessary measures to not only give the project a practical purpose, but realise the power of an aesthetically pleasing staircase to make or break the whole style and proportion of a property.

The Results
A year in the making this incredible staircase is an elegant, understated and beautiful work of art that the team is incredibly proud of.

The client was exceptionally pleased with the results: “When we designed this staircase, we knew it was central to achieving both the practicality and aesthetics required for this high-quality renovation – and we knew Pinnacle were the company to deliver it. Their ability to work flexibly with contractors and to produce such high quality work, meant that this vision became a beautiful reality. We are so pleased and the end client is thrilled with the results.

As a result of our good work, the architects (Rundell Associates) appointed us on a remarkably similar project for a different contractor where we have just completed Phase 1 in a very similar way.

Audley Greenhouse Restoration

 Victorian Greenhouse Restoration

Audley Stanbridge Earls is located near Romsey, Hampshire. Every Audley village has its own health club, library and restaurant and is dedicated to creating a unique community and luxury independent lifestyle for their residents.

The Challenge

Having discovered the quality, reliability and finish of Pinnacle’s work during their time working for main contractors on another Audley Retirement Village, the Developers at Stanbridge Earls had a very special project in mind. They knew that Pinnacle were the team to take it on.

The original greenhouse requiring restoration dated back to 1900’s during the industrial revolution of the Victorian era, and despite standing the test of time, it certainly lacked the grandeur of its hay day. On closer examination it was established that the wood was just too damaged and impossible to repair.

Despite the fact that the location was outside their usual area, and this wasn’t a usual project, Pinnacle were keen to do everything to help their client and took on this ambitious restoration.

The Solution

Pinnacle’s solution was to create a sympathetic like for like of the original greenhouse, keeping its original features in-tact.

To replicate the wooden rafters, bespoke cutters were made. Using European oak, the primary and secondary rafters were manufactured offsite and were able to be stored until required. The timber rafters hold the glass panels and require 2 grooves at the top – 1 for glass and the second to collect condensation which would then run off into the gutters.

Pinnacle changed all of the glass panels. These were toughened glass so that not only would they be made to survive the next 120 years; they would meet the necessary H&S requirements as well as aesthetic ones. In addition, they repaired and repointed all the brickwork to keep it water tight.

Going above and beyond the original brief, Pinnacle also repaired the original metalwork, renewed all the gutters and removed the interior rubbish. Taking immense pride in all their work means Pinnacle are always happy to step up to extra tasks required to see a job well done.

The Results

The Residents at Audley couldn’t wait for it to be finished. They were frequently found chatting to the Pinnacle team, and they were so excited about the opportunity to have their own small planting plots inside. The team were always happy to talk, explaining the process, what they were doing and answering questions. The greenhouse is now ready for the internal elements to be completed so the residents will be able to create a new community, friendships and produce to enjoy!

This was a unique project which required a unique approach. Having worked with Pinnacle previously, we knew they would be a perfect fit. They did not disappoint, and we are absolutely thrilled with the restoration of this historical building, and the joy it will bring the residents for many years to come.”

Patrick Murtagh, Audley Stanbridge Earls.
